Bahria Town International Hospital Lahore Introduces Pakistan’s First Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) Procedure Using European CE-Certified Technology

Tuesday, June 03, 2025

Lahore – Bahria Town International Hospital Lahore has made history by becoming the first hospital in Pakistan to successfully perform Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) using CE/MDR/ISO-certified European technology. This breakthrough marks a significant advancement in the treatment of coronary artery disease, setting a new benchmark for cardiac care across the country.
Performed under the guidance of Chairman Malik Riaz Hussain, the milestone procedure was led by Professor Dr. Nauman Naseer, Director of the Cardiology Program at Bahria Town International Hospital Lahore.

“IVL uses sonic pressure waves to break down hardened calcium deposits in the coronary arteries,” explained Dr. Nauman. “This allows for safer, more effective stent placement and improved blood flow to the heart—offering a significant improvement over conventional angioplasty techniques.”

Dr. Farqad Alamgir, Co-Director of the Cardiology Program and Advisor to the Chief Minister, added:

“Originally developed for kidney stone treatment, IVL has now been adapted for cardiac procedures with remarkable success. It uses a specially designed balloon catheter to gently fracture calcium without damaging the arterial walls—making the process minimally invasive and significantly safer.”

Dr. Shazia Ishaque, Vice President of Bahria Town International Hospitals, stated:

“This landmark achievement opens a new chapter in Pakistan’s cardiac care journey. Our team’s success with IVL technology reflects our ongoing commitment to bringing world-class healthcare to the people of Punjab and beyond.”

The introduction of IVL at Bahria Town International Hospital Lahore is a major stride in elevating the national standard of cardiac care. By integrating this globally recognized innovation, the hospital continues to empower its medical teams and serve the community with cutting-edge, compassionate healthcare.
